A good meal does not have to be made with a huge variety of ingredients. And  sometimes, the best food requires a bit less than a half hour to create. This Fried Grouper Steak is a perfect example of a deliciously salty dish made with one of the simplest processes for cooking. You will just need to prepare the fish for cooking, and then fry it.

And like I mentioned earlier, this won’t be a pain on the wallet as you will need just about six ingredients in total. I’d say that this fits most meals of the day, but I would recommend trying it as a lovely lunch meal to fill you up for the rest of the day with a great deal of protein.

How to Cook Fried Grouper Steak

Seasoning the fish

Get 1 teaspoon of sea salt, as well as ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper, and sprinkle this on your 2 lbs. of grouper that you have cut up into steaks. Rub these seasonings all over the fish. Then just let this sit for 10 minutes to let the grouper steak absorb that flavor.

Coating the fish in cornstarch

We will now grab ½ cup of all-purpose flour, and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Mix these together in a wide deep plate. Then go ahead, and lightly dust your fish with this. Turn the fish over to get both sides coated well.

Frying the grouper steak

It’s time to pour 1 cup of cooking oil in a deep frying pan. You can put the grouper steak you’ve prepared inside once the oil is hot. We will fry each side for 6 to 8 minutes using just medium heat. You can stop earlier or later depending on when the fish gets golden brown.

Removing excess oil

Now that we’re all done with frying, we can transfer the grouper steak to a plate lined with paper towels. Arrange this so that each fish is on top of the paper towels. These are needed to absorb any of the excess oil from cooking.

Serving the dish

Just put the fish on a serving plate of choice, and you’re done!

Now if I were you, I would prepare a few more dishes that would just be perfect for this Fried Grouper Steak.

Condiments

Soy Sauce

This is easily one of the most versatile condiments out there. Soy sauce is deliciously salty, and can truly boost the flavor of any dish. Not to mention, it can actually be really good for you. Just make sure to have it in moderation. Some studies point to how soy sauce can help your digestive process. And dark soy sauce, in particular, has a great deal of strong antioxidants.

Calamansi

For a hint of tanginess, you may want to sprinkle in some calamansi juice to your Fried Grouper Steak. Just one squeeze of this fruit can go a long way. Calamansi has a deliciously tart flavor with a sort of brightness to it that helps make a meal taste lighter. And you may already be aware of this, but this ingredient is incredibly nutritious. It’s got vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, calcium, among many other vitamins and minerals.

Fish Sauce

You will often see fish sauce, better known as patis in the Philippines, with soup recipes. But it can also be a pretty great dip or sauce to have with, as the name already implies, fish dishes. Initially, this may be unappealing to some because of its strong odor. But you should definitely try to withstand it because after a while, you may find yourself having patis with more and more of your meals. You can expect a unique umami flavor that helps bring out the savor in your food.

What to Eat with Fried Grouper Steak

Garlic Fried Rice

Could any Pinoy say no to a warm plate of Sinangag or Garlic Fried Rice? This is the side dish that you can pair with practically every fried Filipino dish. And that includes our Fried Grouper Steak! My tip for when you are making this is to watch your usage of oil. Too much of this can be overwhelming, and as you may already guess, can turn the dish too oily.

Papaya Atchara

What we’ve got here is yet another recipe that matches various Pinoy dishes. While we normally have our Papaya Atchara with grilled food, this also complements our grouper quite well. That’s because when things are getting too savory with our meal, this side gives you a different taste to renew your palate.

Now I don’t know about you, but this grouper steak would taste even better with some added flavor from sauces. Here are three condiments you probably already have at home you can try the dish with!

How about you? What do you like to eat with your grouper steak? Drop your answers in the comments section!

Is that fry 6-8 minutes per side, or total?
